Hosta plants are a popular perennial for their varied and colorful leaves and great versatility in the garden. The solid colored leaves may be blue, green, gold, or yellow. Some have lighter colors in the center of the leaves and some leaf margins show a lighter color on the leaf edge.
They readily adapt to the needs of most gardening situations. Hostas prefer well-drained soils amended with organic matter, such as compost or rotted animal manure. Growing hostas on raised beds is highly recommended and soggy soil conditions will not work. Planting, transplanting and dividing should be done in early spring when the leaves begin to emerge.
